WHO IN BLACK DETROIT®
ASSOCIATE PUBLISHER
World-class
photographer Monica Morgan is more than just “a photographer.”
She lives life through the lens.
Monica is one of Detroit’s most
widely acclaimed photojournalists, and has been honored as the recipient
of the 2003 SBC African American Excellence Awards. She was voted
one of “Detroit’s Most Influential Women” and
a “Leader of the 21st Century.” Monica has received
many awards and is featured in a national 30-minute documentary.
Monica’s work has appeared internationally
via Associated Press Worldwide and Newsweek-Japan. With credits
including, The New York Daily News, The Detroit
News, Detroit Free Press, Fortune, Ebony,
Jet, O (Oprah) Magazine, Black Enterprise,
The Michigan Chronicle and many other publications.
Though once a journalist, columnist
and public relations specialist, for over a decade she has enjoyed
speaking through the camera. From celebrity shots to corporate assignments,
Monica’s instincts have taken her all over the world, with
photographic travels to Spain, Corsica, Germany, Sicily, Italy,
France, England and Malta.
International assignments have included
South Africa’s First All-Race Elections, The Inauguration
and Retirement of Nelson Mandela, as well as The 30th Revolution
Celebration of Libya and The Organization of African Unity Summits
in various countries with over 43 African presidents in attendance.
Monica has documented lifestyles in
Dakar, Senegal; Banjul Gambia; Lome, Togo; Cottonou, Benin; Abuja,
Nigeria; Khartoom and Dafur, Sudan, Kumasi and Accra, Ghana and
various cities in Israel. She captured the inaugural activities
of Dominica’s late Prime Minister Rosie Douglass, and the
memorial services for Israel’s former First Lady, Leah Rabin,
the refugee camps in Dafur, Sudan and covered children with AIDs
in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.
Although, she claims to be shy, Monica
has the undeniable ability to communicate with people from all walks
of life. Her strength comes in getting close enough to subjects
to make them comfortable enough to allow their true essence on film.
The late Mayor Coleman A. Young cited
her as Detroit’s best photographer or as he so aptly put it,
“the sure shot.” Busy CEOs and celebrities respect the
deftness and speed with which she works. Rock and Roll legend Chuck
Berry nicknamed her “Fast Photographer.” Edsel Ford
calls her “the best,” Civil Rights icon Rosa Parks called
her work “great” and selected Monica to be her personal
and official photographer.
Currently Monica has many Fortune
500 clients, including DaimlerChrysler, General Motors and Coca-Cola.
