Gantt Huberman Architects

Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Gantt attended Iowa State University from 1960 until 1962. He applied to Clemson University in 1961, and was admitted in 1963 in forbearance of a court order, which made him the first black student to attend an all-white school in South Carolina. Gantt received, with honors, a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1965, and a Master of City Planning degree from MIT in 1970.

Serving more than three terms on the Charlotte City Council in the 1970s, in 1983 Gantt became the first African-American mayor, serving two successful terms.

Gantt co-founded Gantt Huberman Architects with Jeff Huberman in 1971. The firm has received numerous awards, including the 2006 American Institute of Architects North Carolina Firm Award. He currently serves on visiting committees at the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. In recognition of his achievements, the new Afro-American Cultural Center in Charlotte was named the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture.
